About Heinemann

Creating Excellence

As an educational publisher, Heinemann publishes a range of school textbooks, library books, e-learning and professional development materials for all schools in South Africa.

Heinemann is justifiably proud of our educational materials. We believe that each Heinemann course offers:

  • Academic results: Every Heinemann course will yield a strong academic result in order to ensure learners progress successfully to the next level.

  • An excellent teaching experience: Every Heinemann textbook and Teacher’s Guide provides the teacher with thorough support. Heinemann books reduce the amount of time a teacher needs to spend on research, preparation and test-setting. This allows the teacher to focus on the job of face-to-face teaching and learner support instead of administration.

  • A successful learning experience: Learners are the target of the education system. They deserve Heinemann textbooks which teach rather than tell, and which show how rather than just instruct.

Heinemann showcases a range of products at the annual Cape Town Book Fair. The Fair has nearly 50 000 visitors, Publishers from 30 African countries and 35 international countries present exciting material, publishing services, introductions of authors, talks and discussions across a wide spectrum of topics and much more. The CTBF attracts visitors from all over South Africa and across the globe.

Training Teachers

Heinemann Educator Empowerment Team (HEET) is a unit of the Sales and Marketing division. We offer both generic support on understanding and implementing the National Curriculum Statement, as well as specific training on how to get the best results from Heinemann’s extremely successful and educationally excellent courses. The primary purpose of this unit is to assist educators in all provinces of our country with regard to curriculum issues such as planning and assessment. In this regard our company is playing a meaningful role in the transformation process of the educational sector of our country. For more information click here.

Reaching Communities

Heinemann is dedicated to becoming more involved in the education of South African learners. One of the problems facing learners and teachers is the lack of resources such as school desks. However, 6 600 learners in KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo are now the proud owners of Lapdesks thanks to the generosity of Heinemann Publishers and contributions made by their staff, friends and family of staff, and suppliers. Eight primary schools in Limpopo and four schools in KZN were visited by Heinemann staff and Lapdesk personnel for the official handover of the desks.

The portable Lapdesk dramatically improve the learning conditions of children who do not have access to desks in their classrooms. The Lapdesk is a moulded unit which lies comfortably on the lap of a learner, providing a strong working and writing surface. This aids learning and gives children the opportunity to create a better life for themselves through improved academic performance.

The ceremonies, held between 19 and 23 March 2007, were moving and deeply emotional. The children at the schools sang, danced and performed in the hot sun, smiling and displaying great appreciation for the donation they were to receive. The school officials went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The teachers were supportive of this act to help them carry out their passion and duty to educate the children of our nation.

The handover ceremonies allowed the Heinemann staff who attended to see that each person truly can make a difference. Big differences are simply a series of many small ones. And we have made a difference to 6 600 small people that will turn into a big difference for the country.

Growing Skills

Heinemann plays a big part in creating a generation of skilled and knowledgeable South African learners.

Heinemann Publishers take part in the annual “Take a Girl Child to Work Day” initiative when we host girls and their teachers from schools in the Johannesburg and surrounding areas.

After a welcome talk and guided tour of the company and its many daily operations, the girls spend some time in the Publishing Department with publishers and editors to learn the intricate details of what goes into publishing a textbook. The girls then have a taste of what the Marketing Department does. A very popular part of the day is when the girls get to spend time in the Design Department working with our talented designers.

The girls also learn how to “cost a book” and what career opportunities there are in a Finance Department.

At the end of the day the girls present the work done in the Design Department to a panel of judges.

Certificates and gift packs are handed to each of the girls for their participation in the day’s activities. Heinemann also contributes a selection of library and literature books to the school for their school library.
